UAE-based space technology company Space42 (ADX: SPACE42) has signed a memorandum of understanding with Leonardo DRS (NASDAQ: DRS) to explore the integration of secure satellite communications with advanced mission systems for the UAE’s national security operations.
The agreement creates a framework for the two companies to assess the joint development and integration of next-generation mission capabilities. The partnership will combine Space42’s secure, AI-enabled satellite communications and beyond-line-of-sight (BLOS) connectivity with Leonardo DRS’s expertise in C5ISR mission systems.
The companies said the collaboration is aimed at strengthening the UAE’s sovereign national security capabilities and supporting more resilient communications for complex operational environments.
Combining space connectivity with mission systems
Under the MoU, Leonardo DRS will contribute its expertise in command, control, communications, computers, cyber, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (C5ISR) mission systems.
Space42 will provide secure satellite communications and AI-enabled BLOS connectivity. The companies will jointly assess the feasibility of co-designing and integrating the technologies for UAE requirements.
The arrangement reflects the growing importance of connecting mission systems with secure communications networks. Military and national security operations increasingly depend on continuous access to data and situational awareness across locations where terrestrial networks may be unavailable or vulnerable.
Satellite connectivity can extend secure communications beyond traditional infrastructure. When integrated with mission systems, it can provide commanders and operators with access to information across wider operational areas.
Ahmed AlMehrzi, Chief Commercial Officer, Government Business at Space42, said secure connectivity is a strategic priority for the company. He said combining Space42’s satellite infrastructure and AI communications capabilities with Leonardo DRS’s mission systems could strengthen protected communications for the UAE.
Focus on C5ISR capabilities
Leonardo DRS develops mission management systems, network computing and vehicle integration technologies for US military and allied forces.
Its portfolio includes tactical computing, intelligent displays, AI processing and integrated C4/C5/C6ISR solutions. These systems are designed to provide real-time situational awareness and support decision-making in complex environments.
The company also focuses on open architectures and scalable systems that can operate across different platforms.
Denny Crumley, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Ground Electronics business at Leonardo DRS, said the agreement supports the company’s efforts to address UAE national security priorities through technology integration.
The company is also seeking to expand its international business through partnerships with local and strategic technology providers.
Sovereign capability becomes a priority
The agreement comes as governments increasingly focus on sovereign communications and security infrastructure. Dependence on external networks can create operational and strategic vulnerabilities during security operations.
For the UAE, combining domestic satellite capabilities with advanced mission systems could provide greater control over secure communications and data flows.
Space42 was formed in 2024 through the merger of Bayanat and Yahsat. The company combines satellite communications, geospatial analytics and AI technologies and serves government, enterprise and other customers internationally.
Its operations are divided into Space Services and Smart Solutions. The former covers satellite operations and fixed and mobile satellite services, while the latter combines geospatial data with AI-based processing to support decision-making and situational awareness.
Space42’s major shareholders include G42, Mubadala and IHC.
Leonardo DRS focuses on defence technologies across sensing, network computing, force protection, and power and propulsion systems. Its customers include the US military and allied defence organisations.
The MoU does not represent a final commitment to a specific product or programme. Instead, it establishes a framework for the companies to evaluate potential integration opportunities.
